Spreading a variety

Abstract
The
classical cycle class map and Abel-Jocobi map enable
us to study the Chow group of a varietiy. However, Mumford’s famous example shows that it is much more than
what these two maps can study. To understand what is beyond the Abel-Jacobi map, there are a few conjectures describing this complicated
part of Chow groups. The spread construction is the one used to connect these conjectures.
In this lecture, we will see how the spread construction helps us to define the
filtration of Chow groups predicted by Beillison, Bloch
and the others.
