The wonderful compactification and Poisson geometry

Abstract

 

I will introduce the wonderful compactification of a complex semisimple Lie group, and explain how to put a Poisson structure on the wonderful compactification with the property that each conjugacy class in the group is a Poisson subvariety with an open, dense symplectic leaf. This is based on joint work with Jiang-Hua Lu.
