Some algebro-geometric
properties of
the wonderful compactification

Abstract
The
wonderful compactification X of a semisimple adjoint
group G was introduced by De Concini and Procesi. It stands out as the role model for understanding
other group embeddings.
It also
serves as a model for us to understand the bahavior
at infinity of some group theoretical
constructions in G.
In this talk, we will discuss
some recent results on the wonderful compactifications. If time allows, we will also mention some results
on the complete symmetric varieties.
