Abstract

The Abel-Ruffini published in 1823 says that a general irreducible algebraic equation of degree at least five over a number field cannot be solved by radicals. Therefore one can not generate number fields by radicals in general. Kronecker’s Jugendtraum deals with the question whether this can be done with special functions like modular functions and other interesting functions. We shall discuss the general problem, give examples, and relate the problem in a special case to transcendence and to the Andre-Oort conjecture on special points on Shimura varieties.
