Abstract

Nevanlinna theory of meromorphic functions is one of the great mathematical achievements of the twentieth century. The most striking result in Nevanlinna theory is the second main theorem. Based on C. Osgood's observation and P. Vojta's dictionary between Diophantine approximation in number theory and Nevanlinna theory, S. Lang raised a number of conjectures and questions in Nevanlinna theory. In this lecture, the speaker is going to show the formal analogue of Roth's theorem is the second main theorem in Nevanlinna theory, which motivates one to find the best structure of the error term of the second main theorem. Many other analogues of number theory in Nevanlinna theory are going to be discussed.
