The
Introduction to CalabiYau
manifolds and Conifold Transitions
2:00 – 3:00pm
Abstract
We will start from the basic
differential geometry of CalabiYau manifolds and
work up to show a number of ways of constructing both compact and noncompact
examples. We then turn to a brief discussion on isolated conical singularities
of CalabiYau manifolds and their local geometry. In particular,
the conifold singularity appears frequently in string
theory, and the topology near the conifold
singularity can undergo a topological transition. We shall focus on a
wellknown example given by Candelas and de la Ossa.

From Characteristic p > 0
to Characteristic 0
3:00 – 4:00pm
Abstract
In this
talk, I will introduce a few wellknown examples and open questions in
algebraic geometry, where a problem of Characteristic zero can be solved by positive
characteristic method.
Refreshments will be available from 1:45pm

All are welcome
