Introduction to Calabi-Yau manifolds and Conifold Transitions

2:00 – 3:00pm

Abstract

We will start from the basic differential geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and work up to show a number of ways of constructing both compact and non-compact examples. We then turn to a brief discussion on isolated conical singularities of Calabi-Yau manifolds and their local geometry. In particular, the conifold singularity appears frequently in string theory, and the topology near the conifold singularity can undergo a topological transition. We shall focus on a well-known example given by Candelas and de la Ossa.

Abstract

In this talk, I will introduce a few well-known examples and open questions in algebraic geometry, where a problem of Characteristic zero can be solved by positive characteristic method.

Refreshments will be available from 1:45pm
